I am Jakob, a lawyer in a town where every promise is binding, even the small ones. My office enforces them, from a promised lunch to a borrowed ladder, with full ceremony. My junior Jonna promises far too easily, which keeps us both busy. One evening a week I lecture at the university, which keeps promising me a chair, and on Thursdays I sail on a cruise that never leaves the harbour.
